HOW E.T.O. IS ORGANIZED.
E.T.O. is arranged into two main parts. “Essentials” and “Tools & Objects”.
ESSENTIALS
Essentials roughly corresponds to the collection of information called “Developer Essentials” that comes as a single CD-ROM bundled with the develop Technical Journal and also included as part of all other Apple Developer Group CD-ROMs.
Developer Essentials is a collection of the tools and information that Apple feels EVERY developer should have regardles of what development environment they use or what Apple machine they work with.
Developer Essentials includes electronic versions of Apple developer documentation such as SpInside Macintosh, DTS Technical Notes, DTS common Q&As, and other electronic versions from the Apple Technical Library. Developer Essentials also includes versions of U.S. and international Macintosh system software and HyperCard. It also has the complete set of Mac DTS Sample Code.
Also in the E.T.O. “Essentials” folder is MPW 411. MPW 411 is an integrated, online information tool for use with MPW and Mouser (part of MacApp). This current version of MPW 411 contains all the Macintosh toolbox “header” information and all the text of Inside Macintosh volumes 1 - 5.
Finally, the “Essentials” folder on E.T.O. #1 contains a bonus collection of information about MacApp and C++. The MacApp Reference and C++ Applelink Messages folders contain a collection of messages from the MacApp forums on AppleLink with discussion about many common questions and challenges invloved in working with this application framework. The C++ Applelink Messages
TOOLS & OBJECTS
The “Tools & Objects” folder on E.T.O. contains MPW, MacApp, C++, and utilities like ResEdit, MacsBug and SADE. Additionally the folders for each of these contains a pre-release version of the product that you can experiment with and try its new features and capabilities. The MPW folder also contains an older version (v. 3.0) of MPW for those who needs it.
Each folder in Tools & Objects contains a readme file with more information about its contents.
INSTALLER
The Tools & Objects folder also contains a special program for installing a copy of the MPW development suite on your hard disk. You will need to move this Installation folder to your hard disk manually, then run the install program that it contains. It will prompt you for the information it needs, such as, which parts of E.T.O. you want to install.
RELEASE NOTES
Each E.T.O. quarterly release comes with extensive release notes (on paper) about the changes to the products since the time that the manuals were written. Refer to these notes for information specific to each E.T.O. component product.
In some cases, the word processing files (usually in MS Word 4.0 format) for the release notes are included on the E.T.O. disc.
SITE LICENSE
E.T.O. is a SINGLE USER product. Like any single user product you may not use it’s content on more than one machine at a time. Each time you receive a new E.T.O. quarterly release disc you are obligated to archive or destroy all previous E.T.O. CD-ROMs. You may not "pass along" the old CD to another user. See the software license on the CD-ROM case and the order form agreement for specific details of these limitations.
A site license for E.T.O. can be purchased. For details on purchasing such a license contact Apple Computer Software Licensing, 20525 Mariani Avenue, MS 38-I, Cupertino, Ca 95014.
Note: Due to restrictions in our license with AT&T, C++ cannot be included in any site license of E.T.O.
PRE-RELEASE VERSIONS
Some of the products in E.T.O. include not only the current final version but a pre-release version as well. These pre-release versions were carefully selected by the product management and engineering teams. The criteria for selection was based on providing versions that give extra functionality and/or useful bug fixes without exposing you to software that would be a danger to your devlopement work.
For details on each pre-release version see the readme file in each product’s folder on the E.T.O. disc.
FUTURE VERSIONS OF E.T.O.
The E.T.O. quarterly release will be sent to subscribers automatically. It will contain all the new versions of the E.T.O. products, some new pre-release versions, updated versions of the “Essential” information and even more new information.
